Roots and Flowers: The Life and Work of the Afro-Cuban Librarian Marta Terry Gonzalez

On Monday 13 April 2015 New Beacon Books and The George Padmore Institute jointly hosted an evening of celebration and discussion about the life and work of the Afro-Cuban librarian Marta Terry Gonzalez with scholars Abdul Alkalimat and Kate Williams. The story of this committed revolutionary who  was instrumental in the development of her country's national library was the vehicle for Alkalimat and Williams to look at Cuba while posing the questions: What is Afro-Cuba? What has it contributed since 1959?

Abdul Alkalimat is Professor Emeritus of African American Studies and Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois.

Kate Williams is Associate Professor of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois.
