We're thrilled to announce that Jump Up! A Story of Carnival, our book for children aged five to eight years old, has been longlisted for the Little Rebels Children's Book Award 2023. Now in its 8th year, the award is designed to recognise the rich tradition of radical publishing for children in the UK aged 0-12. The eighteen longlisted books are described as a dazzling collection which promote social justice with compassion and joy.
Jump Up! A Story of Carnival, our second book written and illustrated by award-winning author Ken Wilson-Max, tells the story of Cecille, a young black girl living in the Caribbean, and how her community develops their very own Carnival, based on their long-remembered African traditions. It is part of the GPI’s Reaching New Generations series of black history books. The series is helping to fill the void in diverse reading material for younger children.
